Focus on Young Photographers at the RISD Museum this Sunday, January 14th.

Join us this Sunday at the RISD Museum for a presentation of student photographic work in response to Fantastic Tales: The Photography of Nan Goldin and Urban America, 1930-1970. Local young artists (ages 15–24) in collaboration with AS220’s Broad Street Studio, New Urban Arts, and RISD’s High School Student Initiatives will present their photographs from 1-4 pm. There will be 8 photographers from New Urban Arts presenting their work.

At 1 pm, there is a special presentation by Arthi Sundaresh, a Teaching Artist at New Urban Arts, who will discuss discuss how her work resonates with issues explored by Nan Goldin in the exhibit, Fantastic Tales. Following Arthi’s talk, view the photography in the two museum exhibitions prior to the student presentation at 2 pm. The residency of Arthi Sundaresh is generously supported by the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts.

Admission is free if you print the invitation and bring it with you. To download it, visit our website. There will also be free food at the event. The RISD Museum is located at 224 Benefit Street.

For students, their families, and artist mentors, there will be a group meeting at New Urban Arts at 12 pm to walk to the RISD Museum. Please join us.

>>> New Urban Arts isn’t just for high school students anymore! Choose from a series of do-it-yourself art workshops to make a Valentine's present for your sweetheart!

If you love the arts, but you aren’t an artist, here is the perfect opportunity for you: arts and crafts workshops for adults, led by high school students and young artists who participate in our programs.

Our specialized series of do-it-yourself arty workshops for adults are back by popular demand, just in time for Valentine’s Day. Bring your sweetheart and make your Valentine’s gift together at New Urban Arts. Or, come on your own and make it a surprise! Your Valentine will think you are extra special for making a gift this year and supporting our programs, promise. No skills necessary for any workshop.

On February 1st, there are 2 workshops to choose from. You can learn how to knit a scarf or make a journal/photo album. On February 8th, you can choose from making jewelry such as a bracelet or earrings, or you can learn how to make a photo transfer collage. Both workshops are from 6:30 to 8:30 pm.

Each workshop costs $35 which includes supplies, refreshments and creative gift wrapping options. All proceeds benefit our free afterschool programs. To register, please email sarah@newurbanarts.org for more information.

>>> Congrats to artist-mentor Richard Edouard-Denor for becoming the Grand Slam Champion of Providence Youth Poetry. Also, congrats to artist mentors, Jean Cozzens and Andrew Oesch, for their new support from the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts.

Artist mentor Richard Edouard-Denor recently won the poetry slam at AS220 on January 4th, making him the Grand Slam Champion of Providence Youth Poetry. Richard will represent Providence with his teammates at the National Youth Poetry Slam, Brave New Voices, which takes place in San Jose this Spring. Richard is a spoken word and poetry artist mentor at New Urban Arts working with 12 high school students regularly after school.

Richard is also an alumnus of Youth In Action, a premier youth leadership organization. Currently a freshman at University of Rhode Island, Richard is dedicated to continue his commitment to high school students by volunteering at Youth In Action and New Urban Arts.

Also, a warm congratulations to Jean Cozzens and Andrew Oesch for receiving grants from the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts!

Through her New Your City project, Jean Cozzens, RISCA’s 2005 Design Fellowship Merit Award Winner, works with library patrons to build a city in the library, out of cardboard, stuff from various recycling centers, and other useful junk.

Andrew plays the euphonium for the What Cheer Brigade, a Providence street marching band. They received a grant to do a recess tour, performing at local schools where students can dance and march along with them.
